I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy -- it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves. I wrote a poem just four nights ago that expresses my feelings best. This was written way before I knew I would be speaking here today:

Your laws ignore our deepest needs,
Your words are empty air.
You've stripped away our heritage,
You've outlawed simple prayer.
Now gunshots fill our classrooms,
And precious children die.
You seek for answers everywhere,
And ask the question "Why?"
You regulate restrictive laws,
Through legislative creed.
And yet you fail to understand,
That God is what we need!

OPPOSE S2674/HR5509 Which Discriminate Against Disabled Veterans

Oppose S2674/HR5509 Which Discriminate Against Disabled Veterans

Take Action!

Please send the following message to your elected officials and candidates for office --

As a disabled veteran and your voting constituent, I am most concerned with the provisions of Senator Burr's America's Wounded Warrior Act (S 2674) and Representative Buyer's Nobel Warrior Act (HR 5509), which would drastically change the disability compensation system for America's veterans. These bills are loosely based on the recommendations of the President's Commission on Care for America's Wounded Warriors (Dole/Shalala Commission), but the specifics of these bills would do great harm to these veterans in the following ways:

* Offset VA Disability Compensation by Social Security when the veteran ages 65.

* Apply to all currently discharging veterans AND any veteran under VA's current compensation system who files a subsequent claim for additional benefits.

* Once under the new system the veteran cannot return to the current system.

* Protection for ratings in effect for 10 or more years would no longer apply.

* Would require the VA Secretary to examine or consider:
    (a) "the extent to which disability compensation may be used as an incentive to undergo treatment"
    (b) "the appropriate injuries to be covered under the new disability rating system"
    (c) "age" as a determining factor when considering average loss of earnings capacity

* Amends the law to provide the Secretary with authority to adopt and apply a rating schedule for "specific injuries." This provision would expressly limit VA authority over the Rating Schedule and places the authority in the hands of Congress. If the Congress can not correct the Sustained Growth Rate formula of Medicare Law how can we expect the Congress to do any better with the much more complex Disability Rating Schedule?

* Provides for a quality of life payment, but only for those enrolled in the "new" compensation system.

* Allows or suggests: That VA "may take into account the effect on potential future earnings caused by the age of the veteran at the time a disability rating is assigned." This provision would allow VA to compensate an older veteran at a lower percentage of disability than a younger veteran for the exact same disease or injury. Is this not age discrimination?

* Provides that
    (a) "as frequently as [the VA] considers it appropriate, [the VA] must reevaluate and ... adjust the disability rating for any veteran receiving compensation;"
    (b) the VA "must ... take into account any adjustments in the rating schedule that occurred since the last assignment of a rating;"
    (c) The frequency of reevaluations would be determined by an examining physician. This places physicians back in the rating business, allows for frequent "adjustments" to a veteran's rating based on perceived improvement, and further allows reductions based on a change in the rating criteria even when no improvement in the disability is shown.

For these reasons, among others, I strongly urge you to oppose S2674/HR5509 and any other legislation which is detrimental to and/or discriminatory against this nation's v

    YES, I'M A BAD AMERICAN

I Am the Liberal-Progressives Worst Nightmare. I am an American.

I believe the money I make belongs to me and my family, not some Liberal governmental functionary be it Democratic or Republican!

I'm in touch with my feelings and I like it that way!

I think owning a gun doesn't make you a killer, it makes you a smart American.

I think being a minority does not make you noble or victimized, and does not entitle you to anything.

I believe that if you are selling me a Big Mac, do it in English.

I believe everyone has a right to pray to his or her God when and where they want to.

My heroes are John Wayne, Babe Ruth, Roy Rogers, and whoever canceled Jerry Springer.

I know wrestling is fake and I don't waste my time watching or arguing about it.

I've never owned a slave, or was a slave, I haven't burned any witches or been persecuted by the Turks and neither have you! So, shut up already.

I believe if you don't like the way things are here, go back to where you came from and change your own country! This is AMERICA.

If you were born here and don't like it you are free to move to any Socialist country that will have you.

I want to know which church is it exactly where the Reverend Jesse Jackson preaches, where he gets his money, and why he is always part of the problem and not the solution. Can I get an AMEN on that one?

I think the cops have every right to shoot your sorry rear if you're running from them..

I also think they have the right to pull you over if you're breaking the law, regardless of what color you are.

And, no, I don't mind having my face shown on my drivers license. I think it's good.... And I'm proud that "God" is written on my money.

I think if you are too stupid to know how a ballot works, I don't want you deciding who should be running the most powerful nation in the world for the next four years.

I dislike those people standing in the intersections trying to sell me stuff or trying to guilt me into making "donations" to their cause.

I believe that it doesn't take a village to raise a child, it takes two parents.

I believe "illegal" is illegal no matter what the lawyers think.

I believe the American flag should be the only one allowed inAMERICA!

If this makes me a BAD American, then yes, I'm a BAD American.

If you are a BAD American too, please forward this to everyone you know.

We want our country back!

We NEED GOD BACK IN OUR COUNTRY!

Senator DeMint a man that we can trust unlike Senator grahm. ( Could he be Mr President one day).

The State
DeMint Defiant
Senator ruffles feathers, raises profile
(excerpted)
By JAMES ROSEN
Monday, August 6, 2007

Washington – …In the third year of his first Senate term, DeMint is ruffling feathers on Capitol Hill — and gaining attention beyond Washington.

That day was just one example. DeMint, who accused Reid of blocking more amendments from Republicans than from Democrats, eventually withdrew his demand — but not before Reid promised to try to be more evenhanded.

Since last November’s elections gave Democrats control of Congress, DeMint has ascended from virtual obscurity to leader of the most conservative bloc of Senate Republicans.

That role was boosted this year when DeMint’s GOP peers chose him to head the Senate Steering Committee, a Republican caucus of conservative firebrands co-founded in 1974 by then-U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms of North Carolina.

DeMint’s “this is amnesty" dismissal of a bipartisan immigration bill in May ignited a nationwide conservative firestorm that burned his fellow S.C. Republican, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, discomfited other GOP senators — and led to the measure’s defeat.

‘CLEARLY NOT AFRAID OF CRITICISM’

Both before and since the immigration imbroglio, DeMint has angered veteran senators from both parties.

DeMint, 55, has blocked a series of spending bills in an effort to rid them of “earmarks" — funding for lawmakers’ pet projects, often inserted anonymously and at the very end of the legislative process.

“There’s some things that I feel like have to be done, and I’m not in the mood to wait until the next election," DeMint said in an interview. “We as Republicans have to act like Republicans. Earmark reform is a key part of our agenda and needs to stay in the forefront."

The National Journal, an influential political magazine in Washington, published a long cover story about DeMint last month...

“Senator DeMint is filling a void in the Senate by being an outspoken conservative who’s willing to fight against the Democrats and his own (Republican) leaders when they go wobbly on an issue," said Brian Darling, an analyst with the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank in Washington.

DeMint’s soft-spoken manner, Darling said, belies his ready-to-rumble ideological core.

“His conservatism is very strong," Darling said. “He’s taken some very principled stands. He’s clearly not afraid of criticism from within his own party. That’s why he’s rising so quickly."

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint has been in the spotlight a lot lately. A look at what some of the national media is saying about him:

“Sen. Jim DeMint’s speedy ascension to de facto leader of the Senate’s conservatives may have won him a number of fans among fiscal hawks, reform-minded watchdogs and some fellow Republican senators, who applaud the first-term senator for his willingness to buck the chamber’s ‘Old Boy’ traditions. But DeMint’s tactics have started to chafe GOP leaders and prompted private warnings that their tolerance has worn thin."
— Roll Call, July 17

“The Republican leadership is not enthralled with DeMint and (U.S. Sen. Tom) Coburn and would like them to go away. They won’t. They are determined to bring into the open who sponsors and who benefits from earmarks."

— Robert Novak, Washington Post opinion columnist, April 19

“Entering his third year in the Senate, DeMint has achieved a rare distinction for a relative rookie: He has drawn the attention of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and Reid’s deputy, Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, who have taken time on the Senate floor to criticize DeMint by name."
— USA Today, Aug. 2

Charleston Post & Courier
Don't give up on earmark reform (excerpted)
Sunday, August 5, 2007

Only 14 senators voted against the ethics bill that passed Thursday. To their fiscal-responsibility credit, our state's two senators, Jim DeMint and Lindsey Graham, were among those principled dissenters. And though the overwhelming margins of approval in both the Senate (83-14) and House (411-8) showed that this legislation is veto-proof, that doesn't mean it will achieve meaningful reform on the wasteful practice of pork-laden earmark spending.

…after giving those needed advances lip service during last year's election campaign and for much of this year, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., effectively gutted the critical provisions listed above down the legislative stretch — though they did agree to a limited degree of earmark disclosure on the Internet if 'technically feasible.'

While this continuation of pork-spending business as usual is a letdown, the defeat shouldn't be considered permanent. Vigilance can shed light on earmark abuse, even if Congress is reluctant to help.

Public disclosure of pork-barrel outrages like Alaska's 'Bridge to Nowhere' will fuel the efforts of genuine earmark reformers — including our state's senators — as they renew their campaign for more ethical government next year.

Reid and RINOs play bait and switch with
“Clay Pigeon” procedure to mislead U.S. citizens
and revive notorious Senate Amnesty Bill

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada presented the full list of proposals in play in the again-resuscitated Amnesty bill yesterday, using an arcane Senate procedure known as a "clay pigeon." This scheme allows Reid to group all 27 proposed amendments into a single amendment package, divisible into component parts for debate once the measure reaches the full Senate floor.

"We're back in the ball game," exulted Sen. Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican advocate of open borders and a ringleader of the Senate crew foisting the Amnesty bill on the nation. Senator Graham, who has infamously denounced border security proponents as “bigots” needs to learn that national sovereignty and national security are far more serious business than ball games, and “clay pigeons” are critters only fit to be shot to smithereens!

Amnesty by Anarchy:
Bush backroom deal stinks in the light of day
Senators must pay a high political price for selling out,
logrolling and imperiling US citizens

We will keep you updated on their action and voting record. We elected them to protect the voters of this state and the nation, they have used the office for their personal agenda.

Senator Grahm, a Bush yes man, it is time for him to go. he has no respect for the people of this state or the nation, like Bush.

Subject: Immigration Reform Fact Sheet

June 27 , 2007

Fellow South Carolinians --

Thank you for contacting me about immigration reform. Debate begins again this week in the Senate and I wanted you to have the facts about the bill.

We both know this is a complex subject and the legislation makes many important and long-overdue changes in our nation's immigration policies. Below I have summarized the key provisions of the bill so that you will have all the facts.

As my constituent your opinions and thoughts are very important to me. I have listened to your constructive input -- and as you will see below -- much of that input has been considered and adopted.

Thank you again for your interest in immigration reform. If you wish to respond or have additional thoughts on this subject please use my website http://lgraham.senate.gov/index.cfm?mode=contactform . I regret this email account is unable to accept incoming messages.

The Immigration Reform Legislation Makes $4.4 Billion for Border Security Available Immediately

Under a provision I authored with Senator Jon Kyl (R-Arizona), the legislation immediately makes available $4.4 billion in mandatory spending to secure our nation's borders. Funds will be spent on miles of new fencing, miles of new vehicle barriers, surveillance towers, detention beds, the Electronic Employee Verification System (EEVS), and other enforcement programs. The moment the presidential signing pen meets the paper these funds will be available.

English is Declared the National Language of the United States

The legislation states that no person has a "right, entitlement or claim to have the Government of the United States or any of its officials or representatives act, communicate, perform or provide services, or provide materials in any language other than English.." It also makes clear that the U.S. government and federal agencies should "preserve and enhance the role of English as the national language of the United States of America ." The conservative Heritage Foundation has called the amendment "both sensible and necessary."  http://lgraham.senate.gov/index.cfm?mode=presspage&id=275683

Current Immigration Laws are Inadequate - Here's How We Reform and Strengthen our Immigration & Employment Law

http://lgraham.senate.gov/pdf/Immigration%20Enforcing%20Current%20Law%20Only.pdf

The Legislation Holds Employers Accountable for the Workers They Hire

To crack down on the hiring of illegal workers, the immigration reform bill sets up an Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification System (EEVS) to help employers verify the status of the workers they hire. Employers will be required to verify the work eligibility of all employees using EEVS and all workers will be required to present stronger and more readily verifiable identification documents. The legislation imposes stiff new Criminal and Civil penalties on employers who hire illegal workers.

http://lgraham.senate.gov/index.cfm?mode=presspage&id=275393

General Background Information on the Immigration Reform Bill

The legislation charts a new path for our nation's immigration policies. The legislation reclaims control of our nation's borders by adding new Border Patrol agents and technology to stop illegal border crossings. It establishes a new comprehensive employee verification system - for all workers including Americans -- to ensure people are in the country legally and eligible to work.

It also breaks the cycle of chain migration by placing a premium on the education and job skills of new immigrants coming to the United States . This new merit-based system is a major change in our nation's immigration policies and allows us to attract the best and brightest in the world.

It establishes a temporary guest worker system to meet our nation's future labor needs. Temporary workers can come here and work for a defined period of time, but they must return to their home country. And it establishes procedures to deal with the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants -- allowing them to stay under our rules -- not theirs . They will be placed on probation and pay fines, learn English, and assimilate into American society. If they want to become citizens -- a minimum 13 year process -- they will be forced to leave the United States and return to their country of origin. Only from there will they be allowed to apply for citizenship.

Closing Thoughts from U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham on Illegal Immigration and the Path Forward on Immigration Reform

There is no doubt that illegal immigration has placed real burdens and strains on our state and nation. Illegal immigrants have come here against our laws and are using our health care and education services. They have created identity theft problems with their buying or procuring of Social Security numbers and false identities. And even worse, there is absolutely no way to ensure they are paying taxes on the money they earn here like millions of law-abiding American workers are required to do.

I understand that honest, decent taxpayers across South Carolina are bearing the costs of this problem. People are mad about the situation and for good reason. Illegal immigration has gotten way out of control and the problem has been allowed to fester for too long. Frustration that the Federal Government can not pass laws to address this issue is manifesting itself all over the country, with state and local legislatures considering over 1,100 individual ordinances that deal with illegal immigration.

The magnet drawing illegal immigrants into the United States is the ease with which they can find employment. All an illegal immigrant needs is a fake driver's license and a bogus Social Security card, both of which can be bought for a few hundred dollars.

As long as the documents appear to be genuine - a huge gaping hole in current law - the employer can legally hire the worker. The current situation was best summed up by one individual in Pennsylvania 's farming industry who said, "Many of our members have legally hired illegal workers."

Let's be clear, there are no perfect or magical answers to our immigration problems. Any proposed solution which can be signed into law is going to have some things in there that I don't like and I would prefer not to do. But at the end of the day, we live in a political process and nation that requires give-and-take and compromise. It is the way we solve big problems.

While our legislation is not perfect, it will give some much-needed direction and guidance to the towns, cities, counties, and states which have born the brunt of illegal immigration. If Congress fails to act, the problem of illegal immigration will only grow and the anger felt by the people of South Carolina will worsen.

The legislation is the best opportunity for our nation to address our illegal immigration problems in a realistic and honest manner. I hope you will agree.

A letter from a great American Senator!

From: Senator@DeMint.senate.gov
Date: 06/28/07 09:07:18
To: worldnewstoday@dove777.com
Subject: From the Office of Senator DeMint

Dear Mr. Banton ,

Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to the i mmigration bill currently being discussed in the Senate. I appreciate hearing from you, and I would like to share my thoughts on this important matter.

Like you, I am frustrated with the shortcomings of our current immigration system, but it is our lack of control at the borders that poses a serious national security threat. Our willingness to look the other way has undermined the rule of law for the past twenty years. The process for legal immigration has become so tangled and bureaucratic that it is now much easier to enter the United States illegally than to follow the law. And this failed system now tramples on the meaning of citizenship and the American ideal of a melting-pot-nation, a nation where immigrants enter legally and become part of a shared American culture and civil society.

P roponents of this bill want us to believe that border security measures can not be implemented unless we pass this new immigration bill that grants amnesty to 12-20 million illegal immigrants. In reality, Congress has already passed laws authorizing border security, but the Department of Homeland Security has failed to fully implement them. The Administration already has the authority to build hundreds of miles of border fencing, hire 18,000 border patrol agents, end catch and release , and create a national employment verification database.

In 1986 the government was trying to figure out how to deal with a porous southern border and 2 million illegal aliens who resided in America as a result. Now here we are more than two decades later with a new generation of Washington politicians pushing a similar proposal but expecting different results. Only this time the illegal population has skyrocketed and an unsecured southern border poses a far graver national security threat in an age of terrorism.

This is a completely backwards approach. Commonsense demands that we put first things first. That means shelving amnesty proposals and making national security our first priority. Before we address the problem of the illegal population Congress need s to prove to the American people that we will keep our word. We must reject the 21-year status quo by securing the border and enforcing our laws first.

Thank you again for sharing your views with me. Rest assured, that I will continue to fight for border security and the enforcement of our current immigration laws.

Please feel free to contact me in the future about any issue important to you or your family. It is an honor to serve you and the people of South Carolina in the United States Senate.

Sincerely,

Jim DeMint
United States Senator
